If you’re out and about in Burnley, then only a stones throw away you’ll find the stunning Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham. Once home to the Shuttleworth family, it’s now taken care of by the National Trust and Lancashire County Council. It’s earned fame throughout the years, and not just for it’s awe-inspiring architectural design, but some other notable instances that might be enough to even spook Yvette Fielding!
💡 What Is It?
Gawthorpe Hall is a Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion set in over 40 acres of woodland and landscaped gardens, and it’s estimated the Hall was built around 1600.
Inside, you’ll find lavish period rooms, including a renowned Long Gallery and impressive collections such as Victorian-era textiles and embroidered treasures. Externally, you can explore formal gardens, a hidden walled garden, and winding woodland trails that make for a wonderful wander.

Rich in history, beautiful in nature, and surprisingly sensory-sensitive with its varied indoor/outdoor spaces, it’s a peaceful yet engaging day-trip for individuals with learning disabilities, autism, or mental health needs. Sometimes embracing nature can be the best way to relax and reset, and there’s tons of outdoor space across our marvellous county. With it being in such close proximity to the training ground for Burnley FC, you might even catch a glimpse of players practicing their penalties!
✅ Accessibility at a Glance
There’s a stoned path that runs throughout the grounds, and it’s generally pretty even, although should you decide to venture off the beaten track, you might find some slightly more challenging terrain. It’s all worth it though, and you won’t regret your visit to this wonderful patch of countryside.
